St John Ambulance WA considers individual health to be a holistic mind-body experience.
This is consistent with international research, such as the definition offered by the The World Health Organisation (WHO), who defined mental health as a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.
In late 2017/early 2018 majority of first responder organisations across Australia (including St John staff and volunteers) participated in a landmark study into the mental health and wellbeing of police and emergency services. St John is currently completing Phase 3 of the study which involves analysing and interpreting the results to help inform wellbeing and support initiatives.
